Chairman's Message 2022
|
|

Another year went by at the blink of an eye, and we are now entering 2022. In the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic with the different emerging variants continued to cause disruptions to our daily lives, to the global economy and to businesses. Countries all over the globe were forced to react in continuous cycles of removing and reinstating COVID restrictions. From pandemic to endemic, the virus is likely here to stay and hopefully we will be able to treat COVID like how we treat the common flu soon.
As the saying goes, "it never rains but it pours", the series of events in 2021 is exactly such. The rapid spread of the virus from the more contagious variants like Delta and the new emerging Omicron has prompted border controls, mobility constraints, and major disruptions to supply chains globally. In addition, the Suez Canal blockage in March and the various typhoons/cyclones in the second half of the year further add to the woes of the global supply chain. With China being one of the largest exporter of the world, their power crunch and zero-COVID strategy has definitely created a negative impact on the global supply chain as well.
Air cargo capacity continued to be limited with the travel restrictions throughout 2021, in which majority of the limited capacity were prioritised for vaccines and critical medical supplies. This continued to spur the demand for sea freight and 2021 has set new record highs for sea freight rates, with unprecedented record high profits for shipping lines. With the heavily congested ports and terminals, the shipping line's vessel sailing schedule reliability has dropped to all time historical lows, causing further delays at almost every seaport worldwide. As a result, there was an increasing trend where forwarders are chartering vessels to provide guaranteed service for their customers.
In 2022, the freight rates will probably drop from their peak levels in 2021, but likely to be kept at elevated levels in view that there will be limited delivery of new vessels. Shipping lines will also face increasing decarbonisation pressures as they prepare for the tougher environmental regulations from 2023.
For Globelink Group, our volume growth for 2021 was fairly in line with the general market growth trend. It has been a challenging year with extra time and efforts catered to manage the high cargo demands against the space constraint, capacity and costs issues. Amid the challenging situation, we are elated to be able to expand our global footprints last year, with the setup of Globelink Nicaragua in Central America, and the process of the setting up our own offices in Nordic.
Digitalisation remains an important strategy for the Group and we continue to expand on our business process integration with our customers and partners to further reduce the need for manual processes and to improve the cohesion and work efficiency, so that we can channel our time and energy on the bigger battles out there. With the prevalent work from home concept in the current climate, digitalisation allows us to automate many processes, and to switch to paperless and cashless transactions, also contributing to the environmental initiatives as we incorporate sustainability into our business strategies.
Our customers made us what we are today. We want to say a heartfelt thank you to all our amazing customers for your unwavering support in 2021, and we look forward to your continual support in 2022 and the years to come. Happy New Year!
Executive Chairman
Mr Tan Choon Wei

Malaysia is located in the southeast of the Asian continent; therefore this region is often referred to as Southeast Asia. Malaysia consists of two parts: Peninsular Malaysia, located between Thailand in the north and Singapore in the south and the two provinces Sabah and Sarawak, located on Borneo. Peninsular Malaysia is located just above the equator and Borneo just beneath it. The large island Borneo is shared with Indonesia (they call this island Kalimantan) and Brunei. To the north it borders the Philippines (that still has claims on parts of Borneo) via sea.
Port Klang is situated on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, about 40 km from the capital city, Kuala Lumpur. Port Klang is being developed as the National Load Centre and a hub for the region that handles 55% of the container trade in Malaysia. This ideal geographical location makes Port Klang the first port of call for major shipping lines and for ships on the eastbound leg and the last port of call on the westbound leg of the Far East-Europe trade route. North Port was designated a Free Commercial Zone in April 1993, followed by West Port in June 1996, with the Port Klang Authority as the Free Zone Administrator. Below are the active International seaports / domestic seaports in Malaysia:-
PORT KLANG PORTS
- Northport
- Westport
- South Point (Domestic)
JOHOR PORTS
- Pasir Gudang
- Port of Tanjung Pelepas
